IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR THE CALL ANNUAL CONFERENCE

We are eager to welcome you at the annual CALL conference in Halifax on June 24th, and to share the conference with all members virtually.

In this update we are sharing important information regarding our COVID-19 policy, our cancellation policy, child-care arrangements, Thursday social activity and other logistics for the first-ever hybrid CALL conference.

COVID-19 Policy

We care deeply about the CALL community, and we believe we have a shared responsibility to take every precaution and ensure the conference is safe and accessible for all members. In light of rising transmission rates of COVID-19 and new variants, and given the size of our event bringing together members from across the country, CALL has put in place the following measures for in-person participation:

  • A minimum two dose vaccination requirement
  • A daily COVID-19 symptom check
  • If a registrant has any symptoms they cannot attend the Conference without a negative test
  • A requirement to wear a mask at all indoor events (with exception for eating or drinking)
  • Ability to submit a religious or medical exemption to ombudsperson

The COVID-19 policy was developed by a subcommittee of CALL Council, on the recommendation of the Disability and Chronic Conditions and Accessibility Committee, and with the approval of the CALL Executive. The CALL Executive would like to thank Karlan Modeste, Shannon Carson, Austin Marshall, and David Yazbeck for their service on the subcommittee.

Cancelation Policy

Full reimbursement of conference registration fees will be provided upon a minimum of 14 days’ written notice by a conference participant of cancellation of registration. This deadline is in keeping with CALL’s existing cancelation policy

The deadline to submit a request for cancelation is June 10, 2022.  Please email Paul Wollaston (paulwollaston@me.com) to submit your request.

Child Care

The Local Planning Committee has secured two very experienced early child care educators with at least 25 years’ experience to provide on-site child care for the conference.

We ask that any one intending to rely on child care services for the conference to please advise us in advance so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

The deadline to advise about child care needs is June 10, 2022. Please email Paul Wollaston (paulwollaston@me.com) to register.

Thursday Tour – Black Culture and Afro-Nova Scotian Heritage

We are pleased to announce that we have added an optional guided tour before the conference on Thursday June 23. We will leave by bus, with our guide, Ken Fells, a social justice and anti-racism advisor, from the Westin Hotel at 10 am and visit various cultural sites important to the Nova Scotia Black community, including the Africville Museum, where local residents will be on hand to talk about their experience and memories of Africville. We will also visit the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in Cherrybrook, as well as stopping for lunch at a nearby restaurant, returning to the hotel around 4 pm. The total cost for the day, including all museum entrances, guide and lunch is $90 per person. Be sure to register soon as spaces are limited.

Hotel

The Westin Nova Scotian is entirely sold out for the duration of the conference. If you’ve yet to book your stay and are looking for a convenient hotel, the Local Planning Committee notes that the Friday evening social event is being hosted at the Lord Nelson Hotel, for your consideration.

May 11, 2022

The CALL annual conference is fast approaching! Be sure to register, if you have not done so already as hotel rooms are booking up quickly.

CALL is thrilled to welcome members back for the first in-person conference since 2019, and also to offer members the first opportunity to participate in a hybrid virtual/in-person conference. This year’s conference theme is From Labour Lawyers to Movement Lawyers: Collective Action in a Time of Division. The conference program is now available at: https://www.call-acams2022.com. This site will be regularly updated as the CALL Conference 2022 schedule is finalized, including social events, which we’ll be announcing in the weeks ahead.

For those attending in-person, please note that the deadline to book a hotel stay at the group rate for the CALL conference is Friday, May 20, 2022. You can find more information on our website. The rooms are being held as part of the Conference block at the Westin Nova Scotian and the group rate will expire after May 20th.

For those attending virtually, be sure to register by completing the registration form here. Note that there is a reduced rate for virtual participation. Those attending virtually, as with those attending in-person, will have access to all the conference programming live and the recordings afterwards.

If cost is a barrier to attending the conference, there is a reduced “solidarity rate” for in-person registration set at $495 and at $250 for virtual. CALL is committed to ensuring that cost is not a barrier to any members,  and invites any members who need any further adjustments made to the registration fee to contact Amy Kishek (akishek@cupe.ca).

Lastly, CALL Council has struck a subcommittee to craft a COVID-19 Policy for the conference. The details will be announced soon in a separate email.

We look forward to seeing you in Halifax or online for the CALL Annual Conference 2022!
